New Update:

I moved! I recently accepted a new position as an art therapist, moved to a new city, and into an incredible loft space.  You will now see more succulent, cacti, and dye plant photographs because I have taken on a new indoor gardening project due to the new glow provided by my south facing windows.  More sunlight!  Also, the building in which I work has a greenhouse inside of it and a river with a wooden bridge behind it.  Not to mention that the clients I work with are some of the most incredible people I have ever met.  I view it as an honor and a privilege to work with them.

Currently, I am setting up my studio space because this move took place during the past two weeks, and has since cut into my weaving, dyeing, and drawing time.  Thanks for the patience and more photos of my indigo series to come!

Art makes the invisible, visible.” - Paul Klee
This quote completely describes my mantra as an art therapist.

So I thought I would mention that I’m in the works of publishing a dye book dedicated to the field of art therapy.  I am currently in the final stages of the editing process and I thought it would be fun to start sharing some of my images.  All of my dye plants were collected and catalogued from different neighborhoods around Chicago.  I am calling my book the Urban Prairie Dye Project.

I feel so flattered and thankful all at once for my artwork being shared by others on pinterest.  The above photo is part of my natural dye series where I have been collecting dye plants through out the Chicago cityscape and using them in my artwork, as well as introducing this material into my art therapy practice.
You all can find some of my pins under: stephanylatham.com, asuncame.tumblr.com, and stephany latham.
A special shout out to Loias Lee for making my work feel special.  Check out her pins and exquisite taste here.

“There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered.” Nelson MandelaThe willow tree is a dual memory; one that represents a marker of development through identity and the other as a repetitive, soothing ritual. The tree landscape holds perceptions, anxieties, worries, and secrets, physical symptoms, and the love and fear of self-discovery, illustrating fabricated roots, leaves, seedpods, and blooms. The space seeks to develop a safe space where mimicry of the quickly changing natural world can be explored through natural and fiber materials as an attempt to slow down, self-sooth, and adapt.
I just went on a new photo shoot with this piece and the overall composition is much better. I am beginning to think that my art belongs outdoors.  Please see my website for the new photos with this series:

A small book I made capturing my experiences as an art therapist.  Notice how the cover emulates a flower petal.

This photo reminds me of my art therapy practice with my individual clients. I am interested in how nature in art making can help us heal.
Art from nature enriches an experiential connection to observation, contemplation and expression. Like humans, nature is never still. Loss is represented in this way as we reflect on growth, decay, weather changes, degrees of light, sound and temperature and seasons of productivity. These dynamics reflect on an overall greater level about our own structure of growth where our own changing nature, phases of development, interests and pursuits are represented.

I explore the human perception of nature through weavings, natural dyes, soft sculptures, prints, and photographs that reference cultural histories in relationship to the natural landscape. Concepts that illustrate experiences of vicarious resilience and positive thinking will always permeate my work, as it is at the heart of my activist practice as an art therapist.
